Day 238: June 26, Part 2 – Mirrors

Sometimes, somebody else already came up with the perfect words.

“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that’s what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.

A true soul mate is probably the most important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.

A soul mate’s purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life.” – Elizabeth Gilbert

Today, on his birthday, I am thankful that I found him, even if he couldn’t stay. New light got in, and I transformed my life.

  1. What is the Gilbert quote from? What an interesting interpretation of the “soul mate” idea…I thought I met my soul mate once and then could not comprehend why or how I had to let him go. This is a different way to look at it. Thanks for sharing!

  2. This is a quote from her book, Eat Pray Love, during the section on her trip to India. And technically, Liz was quoting her friend, Richard From Texas. But I wasn’t sure how to double quote that in the blog. 😉

This interpretation of soul mates issue is the only one that truly feels right to me. I hope it helped you, too.
